The “Slippage” Secret That’s Draining Your Wallet (And 5 Ways to Stop It!)

Crypto Truth

If you’ve ever placed a crypto trade and ended up paying more than expected or getting less than what you hoped for, you’ve already met slippage — even if you didn’t know its name.

And if you’re serious about trading, or just want to avoid those “what the hell just happened?” moments, then this is something you need to understand.

Let’s break it down without the fluff.

So, What Is Slippage in Crypto?

Slippage happens when the price you thought you were going to get isn’t the price you actually get. It’s the difference between what you saw on the screen and what was locked in when your trade finally went through.

For example, you hit “buy” on Bitcoin at $30,000. But by the time your order is processed, the price has jumped to $30,050. Just like that, you’ve paid $50 more than expected. That’s slippage.

Image2 It sounds minor. But over time — and over many trades — it adds up.

And here’s the kicker: you can’t always avoid it.

Why Slippage Happens?

Two main reasons:

  1. Crypto market volatility: Prices move fast, sometimes faster than your platform or internet connection. It’s not unusual for prices to swing significantly in just a few seconds.
  2. Liquidity issues in crypto: Not every coin or token has enough buyers and sellers at every price level. If there’s low activity, your trade might have to “jump” to the next available price to be filled.

So yeah, this is just part of the game. But that doesn’t mean you can’t play smarter.

There Are Two Types of Slippage

1. Positive Slippage

This is a rare win. Let’s say you planned to buy Bitcoin at $80,000 — but when your order went through, the price had dropped to $79,500. You just saved $500. You’ll take that.

2. Negative Slippage

This one stings. You meant to buy at $80,000. But the market moved fast, and you ended up buying at $80,500. That extra $500 came out of your pocket.

You won’t always know which one you’ll get. That’s why traders talk a lot about “slippage tolerance”, and it’s not just a setting on your screen; it’s also a mindset.

Okay, So How Do You Avoid Getting Burned?

You can’t dodge slippage completely, but you can definitely make it less painful. These crypto trading strategies can help:

Use Limit Orders

Market orders get filled at the best available price, even if that price is worse than what you wanted. A limit order gives you control. You set the price, and your trade only goes through if that price (or better) is available.

Trade When the Market’s Active

Slippage is usually worse when nobody’s around to trade with you. Stick to high-volume hours when global markets are open — especially in the U.S. That’s when liquidity is best, and your orders are more likely to get filled cleanly.

Avoid Trading During Major News Drops

Big announcements (regulations, hacks, Elon Musk tweets) can swing the market wildly. If you don’t know how to read momentum, it’s better to sit those out. Slippage can get totally out of hand when everyone rushes in at once.

Pick a Platform That Doesn’t Suck

Some platforms are just better built. More liquidity, faster execution, and lower trading fees — all of this reduces your chances of getting hit by bad slippage. Don’t settle for the first flashy app you see.

Are Trading Fees Included in Slippage Calculations?

People often confuse the two. Trading fees are what the exchange charges you for using its platform. Slippage is about price movement during execution.

But — and this is important — both affect your final cost. High fees + bad slippage = a painful trade. That’s why choosing a low-fee, high-liquidity platform matters more than most people realize.

How Much Slippage Can You Handle?

This really comes down to your risk comfort.

  • If you’re conservative, set your slippage tolerance low, like 0.5%. It’ll protect you, but might also mean some trades won’t go through.
  • If you’re okay with a bit more movement, a tolerance of 2% gives your trades more breathing room, especially in fast-moving markets.

There’s no perfect number. You figure it out with experience. Just know where your limits are — and respect them.

Image1If you want to practice improving your tolerance, you can try playing online slot machines for real money. You’ll see that in no time, you’ll be a master.

Does Slippage Make You Lose Money?

The answer is yes and no. It’s a natural part of trading in a decentralized, 24/7 market where prices change fast and liquidity isn’t always there when you need it.

But if you understand how it works, and build a strategy around it, slippage stops being a nasty surprise — and becomes just another factor you manage, like fees or timing.
